In known systems for detecting magnetic or electrically conductive bodies, the coupling between coils connected to an amplifier input and output respectively is varied by the presence of the body so that the circuit oscillates. In order to distinguish between different bodies which cause the circuit to oscillate at frequencies which differ only slightly, the oscillator output is caused to beat with the output from a separate oscillator, the frequency of which is of the same order so that the difference frequency which may be in the audible range enables objects to be distinguished. Earphones may be used and a filter circuit may be connected between the mixer output and the indicator device or between the oscillator output and the mixer to assist in separating a desired signal. The input coil is shunted by a tuning condenser and the output coil may be shunted also so that it is resonant at the same frequency as the input.
