859,869. Orthopaedic shoes. GOLDBERG. H. M. April 13. 1959. No. 12471/59. Class 17(2) In an orthopaedic shoe comprising an upper 12. a platform 18 which includes a thick layer of permanently and freely deformable material extending the full length and width of the shoe and has a flat broad bottom underlying all of the wearer's foot. and a flat outsole 20 coextensive with the platform. the shank is free of reinforcement but a pad 22 of flexible material, as wide as the portion of the sole it underlies, is secured to the bottom of the sole, the front and rear edges 24. 30 of the pad being feathered and located respectively at about the ball and the front of the heel. The deformable layer may comprise leather, paperboard, or ground cork moulded with a binder, and the pad 22 may be formed of rubber or leather. The shoe also includes an insole of sock lining 16, e.g. of thin skived leather or of foam rubber, and a strip 19. e.g. of leather, to protect the edges of the platform. Fig. 3 shows the original shape of the shoe, and Fig. 5 shows the shape when the platform has become moulded by wear.
