Abstract

859,649. Fuel injection pumps. BESSIERE, P. E. Jan. 23, 1959 [Jan. 28, 1958], No. 2526/59. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A fuel injection pump comprises a piston 3 which is actuated to deliver fuel through an outlet 7 by fuel delivered by an auxiliary piston 11 to a chamber 2. The return stroke of the piston 3 is produced by fuel in the chamber 2 which is pumped by a piston 1 through a feed conduit 5 to the pump chamber 4. The piston 1 being of larger diameter than the pump piston 3 delivers excess fuel than that required by the pump chamber, this excess escaping through a throttled conduit 9. The feed conduit 5 is provided with a throttled passage 106 which is controlled by a valve member 124 subjected to the pressure of liquid delivered by a regulation pump 128 through conduit 129. The bleed conduit 129a leads from conduit 129 and is provided with a throttled passage 130 controlled by a valve 131 which is also subjected to the pressure in conduit 129. Preferably the throttled passage 130 increases with increased pressure from the pump 128. The pump 128 and the auxiliary piston 11 are both driven at a rate proportional to the engine speed so that the feed conduit 5 is throttled more as the speed increases and above a predetermined speed the auxiliary piston 11 supplies fuel to actuate the pump piston 3 before the piston has completed its return stroke and hence the quantity of fuel delivered is reduced.
