Abstract

952,136. Fuel injection pumps. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H..March 5, 1962 [March 6, 1961], No. 8330/62. Heading F1A. In a combined fuel injection pump and distributer comprising a rotor 3, Fig. 2, housing opposed pistons 1, 11 reciprocated by a cam track 7 and fed by a rotary feed pump 16, the quantity of fuel reaching the pump chamber 2 is controlled by a free piston 20, Fig. 3, located in the delivery line of the feed pump. Fuel from the feed pump is delivered to piston 20 via passages 35, 17, 15 and grooves 10 and 9 in rotor 3. During rotation of rotor 3 grooves 9 align alternately with passages 23 and 13 leading to chambers 21, 22 on opposite sides of piston 20, the chamber not open to feed pump delivery delivering its contents to the injection pump chamber 2 via passages 8 and 11. The stroke of piston 20 determines the quantity supplied to pump chamber 2 and is controlled by a fixed stop 25, preset for maximum delivery, and a movable stop 26 controlled by a tapered, spring-loaded piston 29 acted upon, via passages 17, 27, 19, by the feed pump pressure which is proportional to engine speed. Manual control of the engine speed is effected by varying the output pressure of the feed pump, and thereby varying the stroke of piston 20, by means of a throttle member 36 in a spill passage 35 leading from the feed pump delivery line 17. The injection pump output is distributed via passages 11 and 12 to a plurality of injector supply conduits 14. Preset stops 25 and 32 may be movable to provide extra fuel for starting and means for stopping the engine, respectively. A relief valve 34 is provided to limit the maximum pressure of the fuel supplied by the feed pump.
