[Also in Group XXXVI] In soldering two members, at least one of which is of glass, the glass member is coated in the region of the joint with an adherent metal layer, a conductive layer is provided on the glass contiguous with the metal layer, coatings of solder are provided on both the metal layers and the other member in the region of the joint, the solder coatings are placed in contact and an electric current is passed effectively between the conductive layer and the solder coating on the other member in the region of the joint until the solder softens and then the members are forced together. The heated top and base cylindrical glass parts of a case for an electrically energized instrument, the top having its closed end worked to provide a viewing aperture and the base having leads sealed thereto, are sprayed with a tin containing solution to provide conductive coatings. Silver containing paste, e.g. of silver powder, silver oxide and silver resinate is applied over the conductive coatings to the annular surfaces at the open ends of the parts and spaced therefrom, as bands to the cylindrical walls of the parts and the parts are heated to produce silver coatings. Soft solder is flowed on to the annular surfaces. The instrument is mounted in the lower part and with the parts engaged a current source is applied to the silver bands on the external walls to melt the solder. The parts are forced together and the source disconnected. U.S.A. Specification 2,118,795 is referred to.
