Abstract

Water-soluble dyestuffs of the anthraquinone series are made by converting a coloured anthraquinone derivative, free from sulphonic acid groups, having attached by way of an amino group at least one acyl radical of an aliphatic beta- or alphahalogen carboxylic acid or a heterocyclic radical which contains at least one <FORM:0859283/IV (c)/1> grouping as a member of the heterocyclic ring and having at least one hydroxyalkyl group by known methods into a sulphuric acid ester or into an aryl-carboxylic acid ester which contains at least one sulphonic acid group attached to the aryl radical, or by reacting by known methods a coloured anthraquinone derivative bearing at least one hydroxyalkyl group esterified with sulphuric acid or with an aryl-carboxylic acid containing at least one sulphonic acid group attached to the aryl radical but having no sulphonic acid groups attached in any other way and having at least one primary or secondary amino group with an aliphatic beta- or alphahalogen carboxylic acid halide to form the corresponding acylamino compound, or with a heterocylic compound containing at least twice the grouping <FORM:0859283/IV (c)/2> as members of the heterocyclic ring to form the corresponding compound containing at least one <FORM:0859283/IV (c)/3> grouping as a member of the heterocyclic ring which is attached by way of an amino group. The invention also comprises water-soluble dyestuffs of the formula: <FORM:0859283/IV (c)/4> where A is an aliphatic radical which may contain a straight or branched carbon chain and may contain other atomic bridges besides carbon and which bears at least one hydroxyl group esterified with sulphuric acid or with an aryl-carboxylic acid containing in the aryl radical at least one sulphonic acid, and D is a heterocyclic radical which contains at least one <FORM:0859283/IV (c)/5> grouping as a member of the heterocyclic ring, or the acyl radical of an aliphatic beta- or alphahalogen carboxylic acid. The dyestuffs dye wool, silk, linear polyamides, leather and paper from aqueous solutions. Specification 826,375 is referred to.
