Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula: <FORM:0857879/IV (c)/1> where Y is an unsubstituted or alkyl or halogen substituted 2, 5-dihydroxyphenyl group, R is an alkylene or arylene group, R1 is H or an alkyl or aryl group, n is 1 or 2 and X is a dye residue. The dyes may be made by treating amino group containing dyes with a compound of formula Y1-S-R-C O Cl, where Y1 is a 2, 5- bisacyloxyphenyl group, with subsequent hydrolysis or by treating the amino dye with a compound of formula AC-S-R-CO Cl, hydrolysing, and treating the resulting thiol with pbenzoquinone. When R is a lower alkylene group the dyes may also be made by treating the amino dye with a lactone of formula: <FORM:0857879/IV (c)/2> Preferably n is 1 and the dyes are of the azo or anthraquinone series. Dyes specified are 1-phenyl -3- amino -4- ptolylazo- and -[41- phenyl-azo -21, 51- dimethoxyphenylazo] -5- pyrazolones, 1- paminophenyl -3- methyl -4- ptolylazo -5-pyrazolone, 2-(21, 51- dimethoxy -41- amino-phenylazo)-4- methoxy- and 2-(41- phenylazo-11- naphthylazo) -4- amino -1- naphthols and 1, 4- bis- [betaaminoethylamino- and pamino-phenethylamino]- anthraquinones, the preferred dye being 1- phenyl- 3[a -(41- methyl -21, 51-dihydroxyphenylthio)- acetamido] -4- ptolylazo-5- pyrazolone. The dyes are of use as photographic developers (see Group XX). An example is provided of the preparation of the preferred dye.
