Abstract

A powder composition which, when mixed with water or aqueous hydrogen peroxide, yields a cream or paste suitable for bleaching hair comprises a metallic peroxide, a water-soluble persulphate, ammonium bicarbonate and a water-insoluble thickener. The metallic peroxides used are those which, on addition to water, form an alkali and generate hydrogen peroxide, e.g. alkali and alkaline earth metal peroxides, sodium peroxide and calcium, barium and magnesium peroxides mixed with sodium peroxide being particularly suitable. Ammonium persulphate is preferably used although other water-soluble persulphates such as the alkali metal persulphates are also suitable. The insolubility of the thickener may be such that an adequate amount of it remains in solid form lin the bleaching composition, suitable thickeners being calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, plaster of Paris, talc, kaolin and bentonite. Desiccants, e.g. anhydrous sodium sulphate, humectants, e.g. sucrose, glucose and lactose, and buffers, e.g. ammonium bisulphate, potassium hydrogen phthalate, tartaric acid, ammonium hydrogen tartrate and acid ammonium salts of polybasic inorganic and organic acids such as diammonium phosphate, may be included in the composition. The composition preferably contains 2-30% by weight of metallic peroxide, 5-25% by weight of persulphate, 5-40% by weight of ammonium bicarbonate, 10-85% by weight of thickener, 5-30% by weight of desiccant and 2-10% by weight of humectant. The powder composition is preferably dissolved in 20 volume hydrogen peroxide to give a solution containing at least 2% by weight of metallic peroxide and having a pH within the range of 8,5 to 9. Examples are given. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of powder compositions comprising (1) an inorganic peroxy compound, i.e. a solid inorganic compound (or mixture of compounds) containing peroxide oxygen which dissolves in water with the liberation of hydrogen peroxide, such as alkali and alkaline earth metal peroxides and metallic percarbonates and perborates, (2) an ammonium salt, e.g. ammonium nitrate, sulphate, chloride, bicarbonate, acetate, bisulphate or persulphate, and (3) a water-insoluble thickener. Additional examples are given.
