859,179. Bearings. SCHAEFFLER, W., and SCHAEFFLER, G., [trading as INDUSTRIEWERK SCHAEFFLER OHG.]. Feb. 12, 1958 [Feb. 12, 1957], No. 4678/58. Class 12 (1). The race surface of at least one of the thinwalled race rings of a bearing, e.g. a needle bearing having long cylindrical elements, is distorted during fitment to a carrier member to assume a convex shape. As shown, an outer race-ring 1 is provided on its outer face with a stepped portion 3 of larger diameter than its end portion 4 so that, when the ring is forced into a carrier housing, the race surface 16 is convexly distorted. An inner ring is provided with a similarly-stepped portion on its inner face so that when it is forced on to a shaft its outer race surface becomes of convex form. The oversize portion of a race ring can be uniform, or variable, over its width. A convex race surface can also be produced by providing an oversized portion in the housing, or on the shaft, for engaging respectively the middle portion of the seating surface of the outer, or inner, race ring.
