Abstract
859,137. Electrically - released switches. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. July 31, 1959, No. 26300/59. Addition to 811,367. Class 38 (5). A relay which is retained set, after electromagnetic actuation, by permanent magnetism and which has a permanent magnet and release coil as parts of a magnetic circuit separate from that of the operating coil as in the parent Specification, has a magnetic shunt, including an air gap, across the permanent magnet. As shown, a pivoted armature 16 is attracted, against the bias of a spring 19, to poles 12, 13 on energization of a coil 15, to actuate contacts (not shown) coupled to a lug 20. The armature approaches but does not engage the ends of cores 26, 27 which carry release coils 28, 29 and are secured to polepieces 23, 24 and a magnet 21. When the armature is in the attracted position the gap between it and the core ends is less than the gap 25 between the polepieces 23, 24 which normally forms a shunt path for the permanent flux. The cores 26, 27 release coils 28, 29, polepieces 23, 24, magnet 21 and a magnetic back-strap 22 are carried on a non-magnetic bracket 32 attached to the polepiece 12, this support means being sufficient since the core ends are not " hammered " by armature impact.
