Abstract
Uranium is protected by producing thereon a layer of uranium monoxide. The layer may be formed either by heating the metal in an atmosphere of pure water vapour at a pressure below 1 micron Hg at 500 DEG -600 DEG C., or by first forming a layer of a higher oxide or oxides on the metal (e.g. by exposure to the atmosphere, or by heating in an atmosphere of pure water vapour at a pressure of 1 micron to 10 mm. Hg at 500 DEG -600 DEG C.), and then heating in vacuo at 400 DEG -600 DEG C. to reduce the layer to the monoxide.
