Abstract
858,559. Earth boring machines. HUGHES TOOL CO. Jan. 23, 1958, No. 2334/58. Classes 68(1) and 85. A tunnelling machine comprises a cutter unit 1 and a core removing unit 2. The cutter unit has a core drill 12 provided with roller cutters 13 and is advanced by jacks 27 acting against an expandible ring 25. The core drill is preceded by a pilot cutter 14 which cuts away part of the core. Both cutters are driven by a shaft 20 from a prime mover 36. The core removing unit comprises a lower member 40 and an upper member 43 which are both carried on a chassis 38. The member 43 is pivoted at 44 and can be actuated by a jack 45 to grip the core so that it may be withdrawn. Suction nozzles 47 are provided to remove cuttings as they are formed and convey them to a trailer 48. A shot hole drill 49 is provided to enable a charge to be set, if necessary, to sever the core from its attachment to the heading. In a modification the cuttings are removed by flights 15 (not shown-see Fig. 4) which pass the material to a conveyer which extends rearwardly to the trailer 48.
