Class 85 Shaft sinking apparatus comprises a pilot drill 17, a main drill head 13 driven independently of the pilot drill, a platform 5 carrying mechanism for rotating the head and which may be fixed in the shaft, a tube 11 carrying the head and axially slidable through the platform, and a conveyer 34, 35 housed within the tube and for lifting the earth loosened by the sinking operation above the platform. A platform 3 supported by ropes 2 is fixed against rotation by wedges engaging the shaft lining 10, and the platform 5 is suspended from the platform 3 and is also fixed against rotation. A platform 9 suspended from the platform 5 is fixed against rotation by bars driven into the shaft wall. A motor 25 on the platform 5 drives a gear-wheel 20 having a central grooved aperture which engages grooves 18 in the tube 11 so that the head may'be rotated whilst it is fed downwardly under the weight of tube 11 and a tube 27 axially slidable in the platform 3. The pilot drill has a shaft 28 rotated by a motor 29 mounted together with feed mechanism on the platform 3. Air blown through the shaft 28 displaces earth loosened by the pilot drill into a container 17a which also collects loosened earth from the head. The conveyers remove earth from the container and discharge it through shoots 40 to a hopper 8. Earth from the hopper is raised to the earth's surface by a bucket 43. The sinking operation stops when the bearing 26 reaches the platform 5, the operation being restarted by lowering the platforms. Whilst the platforms are fixed in one position the lining is built up from the platform 9 to join lining previously laid.
