Abstract

857,839. Handling-appliances for drums ; handles for containers. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. April 29, 1959 [May 16, 1958], No. 14622/59. Classes 21 and 66. A lever for upending drums having end flanges 6, 6a and intermediate rolling hoops 10, 11, is as shown in the Figure. It comprises a bent lever I having at one end a fixed or adjustable member 2 curved to the shape of the drum. At its middle part the lever 1 has a hook 4 and a stop 5 which are fixed or adjustable to engage one of the end flanges 6, 6a. At its other end the lever 1 has an arm 7 having two props 9 for contacting the end face 3a of the drum. The drum is upended by lifting in the direction F and as soon as its centre of gravity passes its upper limit the hook 4 becomes disengaged from the flange 6. The stop 5 then engages the flange 6 and the handle is pulled in a direction opposite to the arrow F to cause the props 9 to engage the end face 3a and break the swing of the drum until it has attained its vertical position.
