857,521. Seaming. PLASTUS S.A. Sept. 13, 1957 [July 4, 1957], No. 28848/57. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] In a process of making bags of thermoplastic material, two superposed thermoplastic films 54, Fig. 3, are unwound from a roller 55 and fed between two paper or like support-webs 56 unwound from spools 57, and the assembly is fed by an endless belt 61 between welding electrodes. The belt 61 may be pliable or semihard, and is supported by a fixed plate 62. There are two vertically reciprocating heated electrodes 58 each having an adjustable pointed and projecting element 59, and during the welding operation to form the bags the point of each element 59, due to heat and pressure, severs and then seals the opposed ends of the superposed films 54, and the ledge of the electrode 58 welds the bag edges along a narrow zone. The two paper webs 56 are forced into contact at the points between the bags and they adhere temporarily to the bags. The element 59 may be adjusted so that the films 54 are only partially severed. Instead of two superposed films, a single film folded longitudinally, or a flattened tube of thermoplastic, may be used. The belt 61 may be replaced by a support-roller having a pliable covering, and the pointed element 59 may be arranged centrally of a heated electrode so that welded zones are produced along each side of the severed films 54. The heated electrode may have inserts of silicone rubber arranged on either side of the central projecting portion. The upper paper web 56 may be omitted. The paper webs serve as a temporary support means during the welding and other operations during bag manufacture. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the lateral surfaces of the heated electrode 5811 form a wedge cam capable of wedging apart two rollers 66 against the action of springs 67. The arrangement is such that when the electrode descends, the rollers are moved apart laterally and downwardly, and co-operate with lower supportrollers 69 to tension the thermoplastic films and paper web supports during the welding operation. In a further modification (Fig. 7, not shown), a fixed support of relatively hard material co-operates with a reciprocable heated electrode of circular cross-section mounted in an insulated recess in carrier member.
