Abstract

857,281. Fuzes. SIGMUND COHN CORPORATION. May 8, 1959 [May 15, 1958], No. 15852/59. Class 9(1). [Also in Group XXXVI] A detonator fuze comprises 80 - 20 parts by volume of a first material in intimate contact with 20 - 80 parts by volume of a second material, the first material containing at least 95% by weight of palladium or platinum and the second material containing at least 95% by weight of aluminium or magnesium. To make the fuze, one metal may be used as the coreband covered with a sheath 7 of the other metal before drawing to reduce the diameter. The composite unit is heated to about 700‹ F. between the drawing stages. Other metals may be included to facilitate drawing &c. For example a sheath of palladium may contain 2% of ruthenium and the core may be aluminium containing 1% to 5% of magnesium. The metals may also be combined in an elongated strip, the layers being welded or soldered together or one metal may be deposited on the other by an electro-plating technique. The composite wire may be used in an electric circuit or as a thermal fuze.
