Abstract
857,206. Steam traps. JORGENSEN, E. April 15, 1959 [May 29, 1958]. No. 17135/58. Class 64(2) [Also in Group XXIX] A float-actuated valve, e.g. a steam trap, comprises a hollow body 3 with an inlet 5 and an outlet 4, the latter being provided with a member 6 having a bore 7 and a spherical upper surface; the member 6 holds a bracket 8 with a horizontal U-shaped stirrup 9 between the limbs of which is a rocker 10 fixed to a float 11. The rocker 10 incorporates a bore in the upper end of which is threaded a plug 12 that co-operates with a loose ball 13 retained in the lower end of the bore and forced by the plug 12 to protrude from the lower part of the bore. Between the stirrup limbs are two pins 14, 15, the latter coacting with a heel 10a to act as an abutment for the rocker and the former passing through the rocker with its ends in slots in the stirrup. With the ball 13 closing the upper end of the bore 7, as shown, the rocker is horizontal and its lower surface is slightly spaced from the spherical surface of member 6. When condensate fills the body the float 11 rises and angularly moves the rocker 10 which firstly turns upon the ball 13 and then upon the spherical surface as constrained by the pin 14 in its slots, the fulcrum moving gradually further away from the ball so increasing the ballfloat movement ratio. Between the plug 12 or some other part of the rocker 10 and the body 3 is a looped or corrugated bimetal strip 16 which when hot permits the valve to close gravitationally; when the strip 16 is cold it acts to open the valve so that air and condensate are discharged quickly and an air-lock avoided when the steam is first turned on.
