912,572. Steam traps; temperature-responsive actuating-elements. SPIRAX-SARCO Ltd. June 1, 1961 [June 10, 1960], No. 20516/60. Class 64 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] In a valve device for permitting the escape of condensate or air from a steam chamber, an operating member is subjected, in the valve closing direction, to a force applied thereto by temperature-responsive means via spring means and in the valve opening direction to a force dependent on the pressure of the fluid in the chamber. The valve operating member 10 which carries a valve head 11 at its lower end is mounted in the central bore of the valve body 2, the bore widening at its lower end to form a chamber 18 which communicates with the steam chamber 5 through a duet 9. A set of bimetallic discs is loosely mounted around the upper end of the member 10 and is surmounted by a spring 13 and nuts 14, the former comprising two dished discs 15 and 16 having a ring 17 between them to limit the extent to which the spring may be compressed. With increasing temperature the expansion of the discs 12 tends to lift the member 10 towards the closed position while increasing pressure within the chamber 5 tends to force the member downwardly towards the open position against the spring 13 and discs 12. In the pressuretemperature graph, Fig. 3, the lines 20 and 21 of different slope represent the values of temperature and pressure at which the valve opens, the point 22 at which they intersect corresponding to that at which the spring 13 becomes fully compressed. It will be seen that the lines approximately correspond to the curve 19 of temperature against saturation pressure.
