A method of manufacturing a bonded non- woven fabric from textile fibres includes the steps of preparing a continuous very thin web of fibres, folding the web upon itself to build up a number of layers into a sliver, spraying on to some or all of such layers except on the top and bottom surfaces of the sliver, a synthetic or rubber plastic bonding agent or agents, passing the partially impregnated sliver through a fibre intermingling machine in which fibres from some layers are carried into one or more other layers and subsequently subjecting the fabric of bonded and intermingled fibres so produced to a further treatment for the purpose of setting, gelling or vulcanizing the bonding agent. As shown, Fig. 1, a web W of fibres is laid in layers to produce a sliver S by means of a folding device, indicated generally at f, wherein lattice f<SP>1</SP> reciprocating lengthwise of the web while lattice t 2 travels at right angles thereto to carry the sliver of built-up layers to the feed means of an intermingling machine indicated generally at i. Spray pipe p is supported above the web being laid on lattice f<SP>2</SP> and is reciprocated with lattice f, so as to spray each succeeding layer across the width of the sliver with bonding agent. The intermingling machine (Fig. 4) includes a base plate 1 over which the sliver of built-up sprayed layers is fed, a presser-foot 2 which may be lowered to compress the sliver, and a tread 3 carrying a series of plungers 4. A plunger (Fig. 2) consists of a thin rod with its lower end shaped to an inverted U and having grooves 4x to accommodate fibres when being pushed down through the sliver. In operation, the lower ends of the plungers engage fibres and carry portions of them down through lower layers of the sliver to produce intermingling of substantially the whole of the fibres constituting the sliver. The fabric may then be dried by passage around heated cylinders d (Fig. 1) and passed through vulcanizing apparatus V.
