[Also in Group XXXIV] A magnetically operated multi-disc friction clutch or brake comprises an armature formed of three concentric rings 15, 16, 17 interengaging by oppositely handed screw threads, the ring 16 being provided with spring pawls 24 ... 27 engaging notches 22, 23 in the rings 15, 17, so that as the friction discs 21 wear, relative rotation of the rings occurs and the ring 15 is automatically advanced axially to maintain contact with the pressure disc 14. In the arrangement shown actuation is effected by a stationary electromagnet 2, but in a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), an axially movable permanent magnet is used.
