Abstract

856,003. Variable-speed gearing; operating clutches; bowden mechanism. TRIANCO Ltd. March 26, 1957 [March 26, 1956], No. 9416/56. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3). Forward and reverse clutches, particularly for ships driven by LC. engines, are actuated by an electric motor 20, Fig. 2, driving a crank 21, Fig. 3, and a link 22 coupled to the clutch mechanism (not shown). The motor 20 is started in one direction or the other by a small movement of a control lever 5 on a shaft 4 one way or the other to operate a switch 40 and is stopped when full clutch engagement is effected by cams 49 or 50 mounted upon the shaft 27 of crank 21 opening switches 51 or 52 in the motor circuit. The lever 5 and shaft 4 may also be operated from a remote point by a lever 3, Fig. 1, coupled thereto by means of flexible wires 9 passing through a jointed conduit 10 having guide pulleys 15 at the joints. The lever 5 and shaft 4 also actuate the driving engine throttle through a linkage 63, 62, 61 which may be disconnected at 63 if required. The arrangement is such that the initial movement of lever 5 causes clutch engagement whilst continued movement thereof controls the engine throttle. To ensure that the throttle cannot be opened beyond a certain amount before the clutch is fully engaged an interlock is provided. comprising stops 33, Fig. 4, on arms 31 which co-operate with an arm 39 on the shaft 4 to prevent movement of shaft 4 beyond a certain amount until a cam 35 on clutch actuating shaft 27 engages one of the shoes 34 on arms 31 to withdraw the appropriate stop 33. The connection from the control shaft 4 to the engine throttle could be by wires in tubes as from the lever 3 or by an hydraulic transmitter.
