To protect an engine from being driven at excessive speed by the vehicle in low ratios, downshift is prevented by breaking a downshift electric circuit 21 by a switch 23 opened above an engine speed of 1500 r.p.m. by a vertical centrifugal governor 29 driven directly or through step-up gear 33 by the input shaft of the change-speed gear. Gears are shifted by a cam (not shown) driven stepwise in appropriate directions by a reversible electric motor 10, energized through relays 18, 26 by moving a hand lever 15 (manual only) into positions 15<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>11</SP> for selecting respectively upshift and downshift circuits 17, 21. Switches, not shown, limit motor movements to single steps. Specification 436,107 is referred to.
