A control drum having studs or cam lifts is provided in a straight-bar machine and is racked a single complete revolution on the completion of a garment or part thereof so as to actuate in sequence switches controlling the electric motors and solenoids for the various components of the machine whereby the components are actuated or returned to their initial position preparatory to the commencement of normal knitting of the next garment or part thereof. For this purpose the presser arm truck may be so actuated to enable a slack course to be produced followed by actuation of marking points. The machine is then operated by an auxiliary slow-speed motor and the carriage bar is disengaged from its drive. The fashioning screws are then returned to their initial setting as described in Specification 855,772, and simultaneously a yarn deflector is operated to position the yarn for engagement by the sinkers on commencement of knitting. Welt transfer mechanism for example as described in Specification 852,478 is then operated whereafter the machine commences normal knitting, the drum having completed a single revolution. Pawl and ratchet mechanism is employed to rotate the drum and is itself controlled by stop mechanism which ensures that the carrier is at its correct end of the machine prior to the commencement of racking of the drum.
