Abstract

A convergence thread guide for use in spinning artificial threads comprises an upper and a lower guiding portion, the upper portion being moveable relative to the lower portion and the mutual arrangement of the two portions being such that, when they are both in their normal operating positions, the filaments are in contact with the upper portion only and that, when the upper portion has been moved relative to the lower portion, the filaments are in contact with the <PICT:0855023/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0855023/IV(a)/2> latter only. As shown, the moveable guiding portion 1 of a convergence guide comprises a brass arm 3 pivoted at 5 and provided with three fixed pins 15, 17, 171 of hard-wearing refractory material forming three sides of a rectangle between which the filaments are converged to form a yarn. The stationary guiding portion 7 comprises a brass annular member 9 fitting within an outer metal ring 11 at the top of a steam conditioner tube 13. Three hard pins 19, 21, 211 are secured within the annular member 9 so as to comprise three sides of the hole through which the filaments pass on their way, as yarn, into the conditioner tube 13. When the pivoted arm 3 is in the normal operating position it is horizontal and lies flat across the top of the outer ring 11, and its length in relation to the position of the annular member 9 is such that the three pins 15, 17, 171 are all fractionally within the three pins 19, 21, 211 of the member 9 when viewed from above (Fig. 1). Thus, during spinning, the filaments make contact with pins 15, 17, 171 only. When these pins after a period of use become dirty, the arm 3 is pivoted backwards (as shown in chain-dotted lines in Fig. 2) so as to withdraw it from contact with the filaments, which then run in contact with the pins 19, 21, 211. While in the withdrawn position, the pins 15, 17, 171 may be changed or cleaned in situ, and the arm then lowered again into the operating position without interruption of spinning. The guide is applicable both to melt spinning and to the spinning of spinning solutions.
