854,968. Donning and doffing apparatus for ring spinners &c. SCRIVEN, F. W. A. July 15, 1957 [April 13, 1956], No. 11307/56. Class 120(2). A donning and doffing device in a ring- spinning &c. machine comprises two sets of cop-gripping means, each of which can be moved into and out of engagement with caps on the spindles, one set being adapted to grip full cops and having at least one yarn gripper for each cop and the other being adapted to grip empty cops; there is a yarn holder on each spindle of the machine so that when the doffing device is employed, the yarn is held by the yarn gripper and the yarn holder, so that the yarn breaks between the two. In Fig. 2, the donning-device 12 and the doffing device 10 comprise a framework carried on a shaft 14 which can be rotated by a handle 56 and moved up-and-down by rotating a handle 72 ; the device 12 consists of rails 36, 38, connected together and to the shaft by bars 40, and the device 10 of rails 24, 26 connected similarly by bars 28. At each position corresponding to that of the machine spindles the rail 26 has a clip 30, a fork 32 and a guard 34, Fig. 4, while at corresponding positions on the rail 24 is a series of catch-members 35. Each spindle has a disc 74, Fig. 7, with a groove 76 and three notches 78. When the spindle-rail is lowered prior to doffing, a few turns of yarn are wound in the groove 76. The lappet rail 17 is tilted backwardly and the frame lowered until the guards 34 push aside the yarn passing to the spindles and the forks 32 are just below the cops and the members 35 engage the tops of the cops. The shaft 14 is then turned so that the clips 30 grip the cops ; when the frame is raised, the cops are withdrawn by the clips and the forks, and the thread, being caught between the notches 78 the clips, are broken. The rail 38 of the donning- frame has clips 42 positioned to correspond with the spindles, and a bar 44 hinged to the rail 36 has depressions serving to break the tapered end of cops carried by the clips. For donning, the frame is rotated clockwise from the position of Fig. 2 and lowered to bring the cops to the spindles, the clips being disengaged by a partial anticlockwise station.
