Abstract

A uranium alloy with high corrosion resistance and low irradiation growth contains 1%-30% Zr, 3%-25% Nb, and not less than 60% uranium; impurities should be less than 0.15%. Alloy ingots are prepared by double arc melting in a vacuum or an inert atmosphere and are hot worked by forging or extrusion at above 650 DEG C. The worked alloy shapes are then rapidly cooled to keep the alloy in the gamma phase. The shapes may be clad, preferably in an alloy of Zr with 0.1%-2.5% Sn and 0.1%-2% from the group Fe, Ni, Cr; up to 2% Be may be added. The ingots are put in a tube or other container before the hot working. The clad shapes are used as nuclear fuel elements.
