Abstract

853,929. Sawing ; woodworking. LINCK, K. [trading as LINCK MASCHINENFABRIK UND EISENGIESSEREI GALLERLINCK GEB.]. Feb. 13. 1957 [Dec. 14, 1956], No. 5003/57. Class 145. A saw machine installation comprises means for feeding logs through the machine, tools for converting the outer rough exterior of the logs in to chips, and saws fitted in a saw frame for converting the logs into boards. The machine shown in Fig. 17 comprises feed rollers 80, 81 and a vertically-reciprocating saw frame 59, 60 carrying two sets of chipping tools 65, 66, 67 for acting on opposite sides of the logs and saw blades 85, 86, 87. The sets of chipping tools and saw blades are carried by slides 61, 63 which are transversely adjustable by right and left hand screws 68, 69, 70,71 operable by a shaft 72 ; this shaft is driven through worm gearing by an electric or hydraulic motor 76. When using this machine, a log is first fed between the two sets of chipping tools with the saw blades removed so as to produce two flat surfaces on the log and the desired chips ; the saw blades are then fitted and the log, now turned through 90 degrees, is fed through so as to chip the other two surfaces of the log and divide it into boards ; alternatively the whole of a log can be converted into chips in a single pass through the machine by suitably replacing the saw blades by chipping tools. If desired, the chipping tools may be clamped directly on the frame members 59, 60. In the installation shown in Fig. 20, the log is trimmed and chipped on all four sides and cut into boards in one pass by mounting two sets of chain-type chipping tools 121, 125 in front of a combined sawing and chipping machine similar to that shown in Fig. 17. The chipping tools 121, 125 are driven transversely across the machine so as to deal with the upper and lower surfaces of the log, the other two surfaces and the remainder of the log being acted upon by the chipping tools 114 and saw blades 143 of the main machine. This arrangement may be modified by replacing the chain-type tools by either horizontallydisposed discs 161, 162, Fig. 23, or rollers 187, 188, Fig. 72, both the discs and rollers being driven and provided with scoring and planing teeth. The installation shown in Fig. 29 comprises a laterally-adjustable frame 223 mounted in a vertical frame 215 and carrying saw blades and chipping tools, log-supporting means at the inlet side of the frame in the form of a carriage 238 and a carriage 242 equipped with clamps 244, and a receiving carriage 232 at the outlet side of the frame equipped with wedges 236 for separating the sawn boards. The operator sits on a seat 249 on the carriage 242 and by observing an electrical synchronising device 250 can control a motor 231. which acts through worm gearing to determine the transverse position of the frame 223, and a motor 266 adjusting the position of the carriage 232 and wedges 236. The device 250 is connected by a cable 253 with a relay 252 controlling the motors 231, 266. The chipping tools may be in the form of scoring, planing or tearing knives preferably with teeth to effect the desired result. One form of such tool comprises a set of three side-by-side blades 1, Fig. 3, each provided with scoring teeth 2, 3 and planing teeth 7, 8 arranged in alternate pairs. Another form consists of separate planing and scoring elements 21, 27, Fig. 8, arranged as alternate groups in a holder 20, each cutting element having an ordinary tapered cutting edge and each scoring element being in the form of a fork with bevelled cutting edges 36, 37, Fig. 11. In yet another form, scoring knives 42, 43 are arranged in a group as shown in Fig. 12 with intervening planing knives 45, 46 which are disposed either normal, or at an angle, to the direction of feed of the work. The chipping tool may also consist of a number of individual chains arranged side by side with the links formed with scoring and planing teeth.
