Abstract

853,835. Windscreen wiper systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION.. Aug. 10, 1959 [Aug. 20, 1958], No. 27235/59. Class 138(1). A windscreen wiper system has a pair of wiper arms and blade assemblies arranged to oscillate in opposite senses through partially overlapping tables on a vehicle windscreen without contacting each other. The arm 36 carrying a blade 38 is oscillated by a crank 56 driven by an electric motor 24 and coupled to the arm 36 by a link 64 and drive arm 32. The crank 56 also drives the arm 46 carrying the second wiper blade 48 through a link 68, reversing link 52, connecting arm 50 and drive arm 44. In order to prevent interference between the blades, the blade 38 has a greater angular stroke A than the stroke B of the blade 48, and the drive linkages are, so constructed that the blade 38 has a lower angular velocity adjacent each stroke end than in the middle portions of its strokes, and the blade 48 has a greater angular velocity adjacent the stroke end at the side near the blade 38 than at the other stroke end. The shaft 28 carrying the crank 56 may be displaced to vary the throw of the crank to move the blades into their forked positions adjacent an abutment at the lower edge of the windscreen.
