[Also in Group XXXIV] In a brake shoe for a friction brake, powdered metal-ceramic friction composition material 18 is compacted in a plurality of shallow containers 20, having inwardly tapering sides 22, 24 at the leading and trailing ends of the container which serve to lock the friction composition within the containers; the shallow container 20 being provided with a plurality of tabs 32 which are located in slits 36 in the shoe rim 12 and bent over to prevent relative movement of the containers 20 and the shoe 10. Dowel portions 30 are formed on the sintered material 18 to match with the openings 28 in the base 31 of each container and extend through openings 38 in the rim 12 of the shoe and fit therein; thus providing additional resistance to movement of the friction article relative to the brake shoe under braking stress. As shown in Fig. 5 dowelling of the friction material to the shoe can be eliminated if proper provision is made for resisting the tangential braking stresses through an increased number of tab connections 34a of the container 20a.
