853,408. Carrying liquid cargo. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd., [formerly CONSTOCK INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd.]. April 27, 1959, No. 14351/59. Class 113. [Also in Group XXVIII] In a ship for the transporation of liquified gas having a boiling point below -40‹F. at atmospheric pressure the inner hull 24 forms, with the walls 32 and 34 of cofferdams 30 and the upper deck 20, cells in which storage tanks 36 are housed. Thermal insulation, which may be glass or mineral wool, balsa wood or foamed glass, lines the inside surfaces of the cells and the tanks 36 are freely supported on the cell bottom and maintained in position during expansion and contraction by keys 38, keyways 40 and halters 42. The space between the inner and outer hulls 24 and 12, forming wing tanks 16 and 16a, and the walls 32 and 34 of the cofferdams house water pipes 48, fitted with spray nozzles, and steam pipes 62 to control the heat transfer through the cell wall. The heat transfer may be further controlled by circulating water independently of the spray pipes 48 through the wing tanks 16 and 16a. The storage installation described may be used on land.
