Abstract

1,007,122. Carrying liquefied gases. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd. Jan. 15, 1962 [Jan. 13, 1961], No. 1532/61. Heading B7A. [Also in Division F4] A tank 10, Fig. 1, for liquefied gas is located by an upstanding central spigot 12 which is received in a recess 11 in the tank bottom and is in the form of a cone frustum, the tank 10 being supported upon the spigot 12 and upon stools 14 situated under the tank at various distances out from the spigot, each stool comprising a pair of wedges having co-operating relatively slidable wedge faces with a slope so related to the slope of the slides of the spigot that the tank can undergo thermal contraction laterally with a small rise of the tank in relation to the spigot while the latter and the side surfaces of the recess 11 and the co-operating wedge faces of the stools remain in bearing contact. The tank may be disposed in a ship in which case the spigot would preferably be made of steel; otherwise the spigot could be made of concrete. The angle of slope α, of the side of the . spigot is preferably greater than the maximum angle from the horizontal which the ship may assume. The stools 14 are disposed beneath radial stiffeners of the tank bottom and are preferably made of wood. The space 20 between the tank bottom and the ship is filled with insulation, e.g. Brillite or Pearlite. The tank 10 has a top spigot 21, Fig. 3, engaging in a seating 22 in the ship's deck; the spigot 21 has a block of load-bearing insulation 24 which co-operates with a second block of insulation 26 on the deck through the medium of a third block of insulation 29 attached to the top of the. tank 10, to form a compensating support assembly for accommodating vertical and horizontal expansion of the tank.
