Abstract
852,805. Stuffing-box substitutes. ATELIERS & CHANTIERS DE BRETAGNE, ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS DE LA BROSSE & FUCHE. Aug. 4, 1959 [Aug. 20, 1958], No. 26624/59. Class 122 (5). Sealing means for the shaft 1 of a steam turbine comprises a series of packings 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 bounding between them annular chambers 8, 9, 10, 11 and a suction fan 22 associated with the chamber 10 provided for sucking air from the atmospheric side of the sealing means and steam which has passed through the packing 5 from the steam preserve side, passing the mixture to a condenser 20 and then forcing the substantially steam-freed air into the chamber 11. In operation, pressurized sealing steam is fed via a control valve 15 through a pipe 13 into the chamber 9 and passes through packing 4 into the chamber 8 from which it is returned, together with steam from the turbine, via a pipe 12 to a recuperator. The sealing steam also passes through packing 5 into the chamber 10 and in order to prevent the escape thereof, polluted such as by radio-active particles, to atmosphere, it is sucked from the chamber 10 together with air which has penetrated the packings 6, 7 and forced into the condenser 20, the steam-freed air then being returned to the chamber 11. The same suction fan 22, condenser 20 and regulating valve may be arranged. to serve more than one sealing means on the same or several turbines.
