Abstract

<PICT:0852550/III/1> Hydrated silica containing boric and/or phosphoric acid as impurity, e.g. as produced by the hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride, is freed from said impurity by extracting with a mixture of methanol and a water-immiscible ether e.g. isopropyl ether, and recycling the solvent to the extraction step after purification by distillation. The solvent may be distilled in the presence of solid sodium or potassium hydroxide to prevent formation of methyl borate. The process may be commenced by extracting an aqueous methanol suspension of hydrated silica containing 30-60% of methanol with the ether. The silica may be purified so as to contain less than 10-6% of boron and/or phosphorus. The purified silica may be dried, calcined, and fused to form a crucible for use in the production of pure silicon crystals. As shown an extraction apparatus comprises a distillation flask 4 containing a quantity of alkali metal hydroxide 7, a reflux condenser 1, a return tube 3, an extraction tube 8, and a stirrer 5.
