Abstract

852,455. Covers for resisting fluid pressure. OETIKER, H. Feb. 13, 1959 [Feb. 14, 1958], No. 5075/59. Class 123(1) Premature opening of the cover 1 of a pressure vessel whilst some pressure or vacuum still remains therewithin is prevented by venting the residual pressure or relieving the vacuum through a valve 4 mounted in the cover. The valve is opened when a lever 13 is moved through 180 degrees from the position shown in full line in which its end prevents access to one of the cover securing screws 20 to the position shown dotted. Internally of the cover the valve has a mushroom head the edge 4a of which engages a rubber sealing disc 7. The head is carried by a hollow stem 4b which is slidably mounted in a bushing 2 and which carries an external cap 5. A compression spring 6 engages the cap and the bushing to urge the valve into its closed position. It is opened when the lever 13 is turned by the pressure exerted on the cap 5 by an eccentric 10 secured to the lever whereupon all the screws 20 may be released and the cover safely opened. A spring-loaded safety valve 24 may be housed within the hollow valve stem 4b.
