Abstract

Roller bearing rings are made by centrifugally casting white iron rings in chill moulds, austenitizing, quenching to produce martensite, nucleation tempering by heating at 400-500 DEG C. for 1-24 hours, graphitizing the primary cementite by heating for a long period above the temperature of the end of the eutectoid transformation, machining the rings close to their final dimensions, high frequency induction heating and water quenching the working surfaces of each ring, and finally grinding to their precise dimensions. Following surface treatment the rings may be quenched between 0 DEG C. to -40 DEG C. and before the final grinding operation they may be tempered between 120 DEG C. and 180 DEG C. The rings may be cast singly or parted off lengths of tubing of suitable size. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 738,094 and 742,399.
