Abstract

Mono-olefins containing three or more carbon atoms are polymerized alone or admixed with other mono-olefins using as catalyst a mixture of aluminium alkyl compounds of formula Al R R1 Hal where R and R1 are hydrocarbon residues or halogen, with a compound of Group IVA, VA or VIA of the Bohr-Thomson Periodic Table having a valency less than its maximum and which has been previously subjected to mechanical disintegration. The mechanical disintegration may be by grinding in a ball-mill and may take place in the presence of some or all of the aluminium compound and preferably in an inert atmosphere in the presence of part of the solvent for the polymerization, e.g. isopropylcyclohexane, diesel oil, benzene, petrol ether and cyclohexane. The polymer so prepared may also be disintegrated, e.g. by milling. Specified olefins are propylene, and propyleneethylene mixtures. Specified catalyst components are aluminium diethyl chloride, aluminium triethyl, and titanium trichloride.ALSO:Catalysts for monolefin polymerization or copolymerization comprise a mixture of aluminium alkyl compounds, of formula AlRR1Hal where R and R1 are hydrocarbon residues or halogen with a compound of Group IVa, Va or VIa of the Boar-Thomson Periodic Table having a valency less than the maximum and which has been previously subjected to mechanical disintegration. This disintegration may be by grinding in a ball-mill and may take place in the presence of some or all of the aluminium compound and preferably in an inert atmosphere in the presence of part of the polymerization solvent e.g. isopropylcyclohexane. Diesel oil, benzene, petrol, ether and cyclohexane. Titanium trichloride, aluminium triethyl and aluminium diethyl chloride are specified catalyst components.
