Abstract

851,399. Electron beam apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 13, 1958 [Jan. 2, 1958], No. 42180/58. Class 39(1). A cathode structure comprises a component 13 forming a head with an opening 14, an electron emitting element 12 insulated from the head, a control grid 15 in the opening 14 connected to the head 13, a block 16 of electrical conducting material with a rear surface spaced from and facing the head, the block 16 having a cup-shaped cavity 17 facing away from the head, with an aperture 18 at the bottom of the cavity, and a shield grid 19 disposed in the aperture and connected to the block. In operation negative potential of about 1200 volts together with a square pulse voltage is applied to the control grid 15 and about 1000 volts positive or in phase A.C. voltage is applied to the shield grid 19, and the structure may be employed in an X-ray tube or electron beam generator.
