Abstract

851,085. Jet propulsion nozzles. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., J. May 26, 1959 [Feb. 27, 1958], No. 6347/58. Class 110 (3). A jet propulsion nozzle comprising three annular and coaxial assemblies of segments, has the segments of the first and third assemblies hinged at one end to supports which are relatively movable in the axial direction and the segments of the second assembly hingedly attached at their ends to the other ends of the segments of the first and third assemblies. The jet pipe is extended by two concentric and cylindrical sheet metal shells 10, 11. The shell 10 is fixed and the shell 11 axially movable. A plurality of segments 12 are pivotally connected at their upstream ends to the shell 10 to form the first assembly of segments. A second assembly of segments 14 are pivoted at their upstream ends to the other ends of the segments 12 and at their downstream ends to the segments 13 of a third assembly of segments pivoted at their upstream ends to the shell 11. The segments 12 may be pivoted inwardly and outwardly by links 15 attached to nuts 16 axially movable by shafts 17 actuated in unison by an internally toothed annulus 19. Alternately arranged with the shafts 17, are a pluality of shafts 22 which are connected to and axially movable with the shell 11. The shafts 22 are actuated by an internally toothed annulus 24. The shafts 22 enable segments 14 to be moved relative to and independently of the segments 12 to vary the configuration of the nozzle. Sheet metal webs 26, Fig. 2, are provided to seal the variable spaces between the segments. The webs comprise a pair of channels which may be formed as integral parts of a coolant duct 27 which may be divided internally into a plurality of passageways.
