Abstract

850,783. Reciprocating pumps. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 2, 1959 [July 23, 1958], No. 20096/58. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A hydrostatic power transmission system comprises a plurality of positive-displacement variable-delivery pumps 10, 11 arranged to deliver fluid under pressure to a motor 20, and at least one cut-off valve 13 whereby the delivery side of the, or each, pump which is inoperative at part-load operation can be cut-off from the delivery side of the, or each, operative pump or pumps, each pump being of the rotatable cylinder-and-piston 23, 24 and non-rotating stroking ring type, the eccentricities of the rings 36, 37 being separately adjustable to vary the delivery of the pumps. The cut-off valves 13, 16 have pistons 46 movable to upper positions in which they connect the inlets 27, 29 of the pumps to pipes 12, 15 connected to the outlet 21 of the motor, and the outlets 28, 30 of the pumps to pipes 14, 17 leading to the inlet to the motor. In their lower positions, the pistons disconnect the pipes 12, 14, 15, 17 and connect the inlet and outlet of each pump together so that fluid is not supplied to the motor. The pistons 46 are moved by quick-throw mechanisms and linkages 53, 54 connected to control levers 50, 52 which are also linked to the stroking rings 36, 37 of the pumps to move the rings about a pivot 41 and separately vary the strokes of the pistons 34, 35 of the pumps in a cylinder block 23 rotatable on a fixed shaft 25. The rings may be moved to reverse the direction of flow from the pumps to reverse the motor 20. In operation, the cutoff valves 13, 16 are actuated consecutively so that one pump delivers fluid to the motor during low-load operation, and both motors during high-load operation. Both control levers may be embodied in a single master control. More than two pumps may be provided each connected to a common motor, and a reservoir and low-pressure pump may be included in the circuit.
