A device for altering the positions of selected needles of a manually-operated machine, between successive operations of the cam carriage, comprises a block 1 on the underside of which are intersecting guide grooves 20, 21, for the needle feet, both inclined to a rail 11 by which the device may be guided along one of the earn carriage guiding-rails, and a spring-urged wire flap or flaps 7 by contact between which and the needle feet, one guide groove is opened and the other blocked while the needle feet concerned pass. Thus, with the arrangement of Fig. 2, traverse of the device in the direction of the arrow X will cause needles in the knitting position A1 to be transferred to a position A2 and vice versa. The device may be equipped with a design wheel having teeth, such as 26, 27, 28, 29, engaging different numbers of needle feet. A tooth 26 will not alter the eventual position of the needle feet, whereas other teeth will cause change from position A1 to position A2. The paths of needle feet through the device are indicated in Fig. 4. In another form, Fig. 10, there is provided a block 45 capable of being pivoted through 45 degrees and which, when moved in the direction of the arrow S, causes exchange of needle foot position as indicated on the Figure, but which, when moved in the opposite direction, produces no functional displacement of the needles; such a device may be secured to the cam carriage. The block may be replaced by a design wheel consisting of a disc with differentlyshaped teeth and a pinion having teeth all of the same shape.
