Abstract

A material for making a container for radioactive isotopes or other radioactive matter (see Group XX) is a resilient homogeneous unitary mass comprising lead or a lead compound and rubber or a synthetic resin made from polyvinyl chloride powder, polyvinylidene chloride, polystyrene, polyacrylates, or other thermoplastic resins. Small amounts of polyvinyl acetates or polyvinylidene chloride may be added to polyvinyl chloride. Other optional additions are a plasticiser, for example dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, or tricresyl phosphate, a stabiliser, for example dibutyl tin dilaurate or basic lead carbonate, a pigment, and a mould release agent. Two examples are given of mixes containing polyvinyl chloride and lead powder; the mixes are heated to 160 DEG -200 DEG C. for 30 minutes to 2 hours. A coloured surface may be given to the castings by spraying the interior of the mould at 100 DEG C. with a mixture of polyvinyl chloride, dicctyl phthalate, lead stearate, and a pigment. In another example the mix comprises rubber, lead powder, litharge as an accelerator, sulphur as vulcanising agent, zinc oxide, and stearic acid; the mixture is heated at 141 DEG C. for 2 hours. According to the Provisional Specification, tungsten powder may be used in place of lead or the lead compound.
