Abstract

Electrical insulating materials are prepared by incorporating in polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride, a mixture of paraffin wax and polymerized ethylene, with or without a plasticiser such as polyisobutylene. The preferred mixture is prepared by melting at a temperature of 120 DEG C. equal parts by weight of a paraffin wax, having a melting range of 50-53 DEG C. and polyethylene. For ultra-high-frequency purposes the polythene must be free from dirt and oxidised polythene; suitable polythene is that described in Specification 471,590. This mixture may be strained, cooled and flaked to enable it to be easily incorporated with the dielectric material. From 5-50 per cent of the mixture, based on the weight of the dielectric may be used and plasticisers such as tricresyl phosphate and dibutyl phthalate, stabilisers, white lead and chlorinated wax may also be added.ALSO:Electrical insulating materials are prepared by incorporating in a dielectric material a mixture of paraffin wax and polymerized ethylene, with or without a plasticizer such as polyisobutylene. The preferred mixture is prepared by melting together at a temperature of about 120 DEG C. about equal parts by weight of a paraffin wax, having a melting range of 50-53 DEG C., and polythene. For ultra high frequency purposes the polythene must be free from dirt and oxidized polythene; suitable polythene is that described in Specification 471,590, [Group IV]. This mixture may be stained, coated, and then flaked to enable it to be mixed easily with the dielectric material which may be rubber or synthetic rubber such as GR-S or GR-M. From 5 to 50 per cent. of the mixture, based on the weight of the dielectric material, may be used. Accelerators, antioxidants, plasticizers, softeners, stearic acid, zinc oxide, lithopone, french chalk, china clay, light calcined magnesia, carbon black, slate powder and sulphur may be added to the rubber and rubber-like materials.
