Abstract

849,151. Screw conveyers. U.D. ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 21, 1956 [Dec. 21, 1955], No. 36594/55. Class 78 (1). Transparent containers 1 are moved into a testing position and caused to remain temporarily stationary therein by a worm 7 consisting of a drum surface 8, shown developed in Fig. 3, on which are secured strips 9, 10 which define a generally helical passage having a central portion extending perpendicularly to the drum axis. The containers are engaged in the passage between the strips 9, 10 whilst being supported on a dead plate 6, the arrangement being such that during rotation of the worm they are first spaced from the preceding containers, then stopped in the testing station, and finally moved away from the testing station. The testing station may consist of a photo-electric device for detecting flaws in the bottoms of the containers as described in Specification 798,906. The containers are fed to the worm by a conveyer consisting of a succession of plates 2 from which the containers are deflected on to the dead plate 6 by guides 4, 5, the containers being returned to the conveyer after traversing the worm by continuations of these guides.
