Abstract

847,403. Pressing plungers and dies. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Jan. 1, 1959 [Oct. 2, 1957], No. 30832/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXII] A press tool 3 with an outwardly tapered root 3a is secured within a socket 1a of its tool holder 1 by a retaining ring 4 having a complementary tapered bore, which ring is first pre-stressed by axial pressure applied by pressure means 6 and is then locked in position. The invention is used in particular with a forging or extrusion press. In the latter case the tool 3 and retaining ring 4 are first supported from the billet container 7 by a sleeve 6. The holder 1, housing a bolster 2, is lowered over the tool by the main press ram, Fig. 1 (not shown) until the bolster engages the rear of root 3a causing it to pre-stress the ring and expand it radially into engagement with the wall of the socket. An externally threaded outer locking ring 5, biased upwardly by a spring 9, is screwed into the threaded end of the socket and against the retaining ring 4 by means of a spanner 11 and a dog ring 10 with driving dogs 10a engaging the locking ring. The assembly is then withdrawn from the sleeve 6, Fig. 4 (not shown).
