Class 17(2) A method of providing leather soles or heels with rubber plugs comprises providing a leather sole 1 with holes 2 in a pattern similar to rubber plugs 3 of greater cross-sectional area arranged on a rubber sheet 6. The plugs 3 have extension 8 which are pulled to reduce the thickness of the plugs while at the same time increasing their length and drawing them into the holes. When the shoe is completed the extensions are removed by severing them at 9. In a modified method of insertion individual plugs are forced into a tube having a flared end and normal thickness equal to that of the holes 2 and after insertion of the tube into the hole it is withdrawn leaving the plug in place. In this construction the back of sole is preferably subsequently covered by a rubber sheet 6. It is preferable to stick the backing sheet to the sole or heel. In each construction it is preferable to provide the holes 2 with widenings 5 at the outer surface so that the ends of the plugs 3 which project slightly are forced into the widening during walking. The outer end of the plugs 3 may also be slightly thickened and if a backing sheet is not used a flanged inner end may be provided. Coloured plugs may be used to produce a pattern on the sole or transparent rubber may be used.
