Abstract

A composition suitable for treating polyamide fibres comprises (1) an aqueous or aqueous alcoholic colloidal solution or emulsion of an N-alkoxy alkyl polyamide other than N-methoxy methyl polyamide, an N-hydroxy alkyl polyamide or an N-alkthio alkyl polyamide, and (2) a linear polyester produced from a dihydric alcohol and a dibasic acid which is soluble at least in hot water. Suitable polyamide derivatives are N-ethoxymethyl polyamides, N-hydroxymethyl polyamides, N-(polyoxyethylene methyl) polyamides, N-(polyoxyethylene) polyamides and N-(alkyl-thiomethyl) polyamides. A suitable polyester is obtainable from ethylene glycol and succinic acid. Textile auxiliary agents, e.g. softeners, may be added to the solutions or emulsions. In a modification the mixture of polyester and polyamide derivative may be dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. methyl alcohol. Specification 757,274 also is referred to.ALSO:The water absorption capacity of polyamide fibres, filaments and textiles is improved by treating them with an aqueous or aqueous alcoholic colloidal solution or emulsion of an N-alkoxy alkyl polyamide other than N-methoxy methyl polyamide, an N-hydroxy alkyl polyamide or an N-alkthio alkylpolyamide in the presence of a linear polyester produced from a dihydric alcohol and a dibasic acid, which is soluble at least in hot water, and then heating to a temperature above 100 DEG C. Suitable polyamide derivatives are N-ethoxymethyl polyamides, N-hydroxy methyl polyamides, N-(polyoxyethylene methyl) polyamides, N-(polyoxyethylene) polyamides and N-(alkyl-thiomethyl) polyamides. A suitable polyester is obtainable from ethylene glycol and succinic acid. Textile auxiliary agents, e.g. softeners, may be added to the solutions or emulsions. The treated textiles may be dried and heated at temperatures above 100 DEG C. or subjected to a steam treatment instead of being dried, the steam treatment optionally being preceded by a treatment with water. In a modification of the process the mixture of polyester and polyamide derivative may be dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. methyl alcohol, and sprayed on to the textiles or the textiles may be rinsed with the solution. Hosiery made from polycaprolactam may be treated. Specification 757,274 is referred to.
