Abstract
A tennis ball core, inflated or at atmospheric pressure, comprises a rubber obtained by polymerizing in the presence of natural rubber latex, a monomer containing a vinyl group in the molecule. The polymer-modified rubber may be used alone or mixed with natural or synthetic rubber. The monomer may be an ester such as methyl methacrylate or vinyl chloride, a hydrocarbon such as styrene or butadiene, acrylic acid or a derivative thereof such as acryloritrile, or mixtures of these monomers. The proportion of vinyl compound in the polymer-modified rubber is from 10 to 75% and preferably from 15 to 50%. If mixed monomers of styrene and butadiene be used, there is from 2 to 6 times as much of the former as of the latter. In particular examples, the polymer-modified rubber contains styrene and butadiene as described in Specification 652,401 and is compounded with natural rubber in the proportions 55:90 or 20:95 together with vulcanizing and other agents; or the polymer contains methyl methacrylate and is compounded with rubber in the proportion 95:100. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 700,544.
