Abstract

844,587. Producing boron electrolytically. AMERICAN POTASH & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. March 10, 1959, No. 8255/59. Class 41. Elemental boron is produced electrolytically using boron carbide as consumable anode, and as electrolyte a molten mixture of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chloride, and an alkali metal fluoborate not exceeding 50% of the mixture. A voltage of 3V or below is used at which the electrolyte is not decomposed. The boron is deposited on the cathode as a spongy crystalline aggregate. A suitable apparatus consists of a graphite crucible 6 inserted in a metal container 7. A granular boron carbide layer 11 is maintained in position by a perforated graphite cylinder 12. A steel cathode 14 is suspended in a molten electrolyte kept at 750‹-850‹ C. and consisting of a mixture of sodium, potassium, lithium or calcium chloride, (a mixture of potassium and sodium or lithium chloride being preferred) and alkali metal fluoborate. Argon or other inert gas is present. The cathode coated with boron and some electrolyte is withdrawn, preferably cooled in the inert atmosphere; and then broken off the cathode, washed with water, HCI, and dried.
