Abstract
832,416. Electrolytic production of refractory metals of Group IV, V and VI. NATIONAL LEAD CO. Sept. 9, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 28416/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. In the production of the refractory metals of Group IV, V and VI except protoactinium by electrolysis of a fused salt bath consisting of one or more of a chloride, bromide, or iodide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal into which is introduced a chloride, bromide, or iodide of the refractory metal, an atmosphere of chlorine, bromine or iodine is employed to avoid oxygen contamination, the halogens having greater affinity for reducing agents than oxygen. As described, titanium is produced by electrolysis under conditions as in Specification 734,094 in a fused bath of sodium chloride containing a small percentage of lithium chloride in a diaphragmless cell between a graphite anode and a perforated basket cathode into which titanium tetrachloride is introduced, the anodically produced chlorine supplemented by a stream of chlorine across the bath surface supplying the protective atmosphere. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 678,807 and 734,094.
