Abstract
Soft-grained finely-divided vat dyestuff pigments are made by grinding the moist or dry crude pigment with at least one part by weight of a water-soluble organic solvent per one part by weight of pigment until the pigment has reached the desired state of fine sub-division and then removing the solvent until the pigment has attained a powdery condition. When a moist pigment is used the water may be removed before grinding by washing out with the water-soluble solvent or by azeotroping. A dispersing agent may be present during grinding. Water-soluble organic solvents mentioned are alcohols, ketones, ethers, acids, amines, amides and heterocyclic bases. Examples are given.ALSO:Vat dyestuff pigments, which have been ground with a water-soluble organic solvent which is then removed, are incorporated into lacquers. In an Example, (9), a chlorinated isodibenzanthrone pigment which has been so ground is dispersed in a linseed oil varnish by trituration.
